5 (Almost) Free Things to Do in Coeur d’Alene with Kids

This post is all about how to enjoy the beautiful Coeur d’Alene with kids. We have family in the area so we have the opportunity to visit in most of the seasons. Most of these tips are geared towards peak season (Summer) but most can be enjoyed year round!

Hiking Tubbs Hill in November

What to do with kids in Coeur d’Alene

Walk Tubbs Hill

Tubbs Hill is a close walk from downtown CDA but offers over 165 acres of natural park, with beautiful views of the lake. We typically do the 2.2 mile trail that follows the perimeter of Tubbs Hill, but it is easy to do less or more depending on what your family is up for. Tubbs Hill is not stroller friendly so if you have little ones, bring a sling or hiking backpack. See information about trailheads here.

Visit McEuen Park Playground and the CDA Library

Between downtown and Tubbs Hill is our favorite playground at McEwen Park. There is a large play structure that accommodates big kids and toddlers, as well as a nice splash pad that is open all Summer. If you need to beat the heat, head to the Coeur d’Alene Public Library next door, which has an amazing kids area in the basement. Also, the programming is wonderful, so check their events and see if you can catch a story time or art event!

Have Lunch at Local Brewery

Our favorite stop is Daft Badger Brewing. The food is delicious – my husband and I usually share the Pulled Pork Nachos, and my kids adore their peanut butter and honey sandwich with a side of apples. Daft Badger is very accommodating to children with high chairs, kids menus and friendly service. The beer is also notable, and not available outside of visiting the brewery. Highly recommend Daft Badger for lunch or dinner.

Farmers Market

The 5th Street Farmers Market in Downtown Coeur d’Alene takes place on Wednesdays from 4-7PM. It is a seasonal market which runs from May-September. Fresh produce, flowers, pastries, art, music and more! With the downtown streets closed for the event, its a great opportunity to walk and admire and explore historic downtown CDA as a family.

Walk the CDA Resort Floating Boardwalk

The Coeur d’Alene Resort cannot be missed, it is a signature part of the CDA skyline and offers nice accommodations and dining. You do not need to stay there to enjoy many of their amenities, including, walking the boardwalk. The floating boardwalk can be accessed from either side of the hotel and is open to the public year round. In the Summer, enjoy the views and boats coming and going. In the Winter, see the over the top Christmas light displays once the sun is down. This activity is stroller friendly!

What is the best month to visit Coeur d’Alene with kids?

The best month to visit Coeur d’Alene is August or September. August if you want really warm weather and to see peak season, and September if you want to skip the crowds but still enjoy the beach and lake (still warm enough to swim). If you have younger kids the milder weather in September will be easier to manage, plus lodging will be easier to find and likely less expensive.

This post was all about family friendly activities in Lake Coeur d’Alene. I hope this inspires you as you plan your next trip to this beautiful spot in Idaho!
