On our most recent family holiday to Europe, we started with a beautiful 5 night stay in the Cotswold’s, a place we have admired from afar and were excited to explore. The Cotswold’s did not disappoint in any way, and is a perfect destination for families. This Cotswolds family travel guide will share about where we stayed and how to navigate this beautiful area.
Where To Stay in the Cotswold’s: Kingham
We booked a house through the Wild Rabbit, which is run in connection with Daylesford. If you look directly on their site, you will see there are a variety of beautiful accommodations for all sized groups. This was more of a splurge stay for us but it exceeded our expectations in every way. From the furnishings, to the friendly staff, we felt so comfortable and welcomed. My children still say they wished we lived at our cottage in the Cotswolds, and I am right there with them – it was a dream.
Our cottage was situated in Kingham which was a wonderful village and has a few pubs, a small grocery/farm shop and playground. It is also striking distance to many other great villages.
You may wonder, what is the best month to go to the Cotswolds? We visited in June and enjoyed lots of blue skies and mild weather. Plus, we did not find the Cotswolds crowded in June given most British schools were still in session. I would highly recommend this time of year.
Where to Eat in the Cotswolds
The Fox at Ottington – Our favorite pub of the visit, we went for Sunday Lunch and Burger Night. The kids loved running outside in the grass while we waited for our food
The Kings Head Inn Bledington – We went for lunch and they had a great kids menu and outdoor play area.
The Wild Rabbit – Most upscale of the places listed but super cozy and great for a nice dinner. Easy walk from our accommodations too.
Daylesford Farm Shop – Perfect for stocking your cottage with organic ingredients or packing a picnic.
Quince and Clover – A yummy breakfast and lunch option.
Where to take Children in the Cotswolds
Countryside Walks – we did one from Kingham to Bledington following the marked footpath. We leveraged this map to help us plan. It was an adventure finding our way together and a good reward to have a pub lunch at The Kings Head Inn before making out way back.
Blenheim Palace – any Bridgerton fans will recognize this as Queen Charlottes palace. We opted out of going inside the palace and instead explored the gardens and Kids Adventure play area. This was a big hit!
Visit Surrounding Villages – Opted to hire a driver to take us through the many picturesque villages including: Bourton-on-the-Water, Stow-on-the-Wold, Chipping Camden, Upper/Lower Slaughter and Broadway. We were so happy we did not try to drive ourselves – having a driver meant we had someone who knew how to navigate the country roads, the small village one-ways, and drop us in the center of each village without having to circle for parking.
Cotswold Farm Park – perfect kid-friendly activity to meet different species of British farm animals and learn about farming. There is also a great playground.
